BUENOS AIRES, Argentina Argentina's defense minister on Friday denied reports that her country was considering the purchase of Russian warplanes, helicopters, anti-missile systems and heavy arms.
Defense Minister Nilda Garre's spokesman told The Associated Press from Moscow, where Garre was visiting, that the defense minister "emphatically" denied the reports, which emerged following a meeting with her Russian counterpart, Sergei Invanov.
Spokesman Jorge Bernetti confirmed that Garre had raised the possibility with Russia's defense industry of bidding for air traffic control systems for Argentina, specifically three sophisticated radars.
At a recent weapons exhibit, Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport had offered Argentina delivery of armored personnel carriers, tanks, rocket launchers, fighter jets, military helicopters and anti-missile defense systems, the Interfax news agency had reported.
The Russian Defense Ministry declined to comment on that report.
Russia is already supplying arms to Venezuela, including helicopters, Sukhoi warplanes and 100,000 Kalashnikov rifles worth an estimated US$3 billion (€2.4 billion). Leftist Argentine President Nestor Kirchner has close ties with anti-U.S. Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.
