Astronaut Neil Armstrong's path to becoming the first man to walk on the moon, which occurred forty-one years ago today, began with his service as a naval aviator.
This included combat in Korea, where he flew F9F Panthers with Fighter Squadron (VF) 51.
In this photograph, young Midshipman Armstrong is flying plane number 116.
