An FJ-1 Fury of Fighter Squadron (VF) 5A flown by the squadron skipper, Commander Pete Aurand, traps on the flight deck of the carrier Boxer (CV 21) on March 17, 1948, sixty-six years ago today. This photograph was taken during carrier suitability tests for the fighter.
An F-8J Crusader of Fighter Squadron (VF) 211 pictured over the Gulf of Tonkin as it returns to the carrier Hancock (CVA 19) following a combat air patrol on March 19, 1971, forty-three years ago today. Note the AIM-9 Sidewinder missile on the fuselage mount. During the Vietnam War, VF-211 was known to return to their carrier with AIM-9s missing from their arsenal given the fact that the squadron was credited with shooting down seven enemy MiG-17 fighters in air-to-air combat.
