View of a TBM-1C Avenger assigned to Torpedo Squadron Two (VT) 2 on the ground at Naval Air Station (NAS) Puunene, Maui, Territory of Hawaii, on January 7, 1944, seventy years ago today. The damage visible on the airplane was the result of a night mid-air collision. VT-2 operated from USS Hornet (CV 12) during that carrier's initial combat actions between March-September 1944. This included the "Mission Beyond Darkness" in the June 1944 Battle of the Philippine Sea, as well as strikes against the Palaus, Carolines, the Bonin Islands, New Guinea, and the Marianas.
