Thunder.

You are correct this aircraft (ZA192) did crash on the 23/051982.

That day ZA192 was involved in two sorties. The first, again piloted by Flt Lt Morgan accompasnied by ZA191 (Flt Lt Leeming) attacked two Argentine helicopters, one a Puma AE-503 from CAB601 crashed while attempting to take evasive action following a pass by Morgan in ZA192, the second an Agusta A109 AE-337 also from CAB601 was spotted taking cover in a ravine by Leeming in ZA191 and was subsequently strafed and destroyed. A second Puma AE-500 was spotted close to the A109 but Leeming's ammunition had been expended on AE-337, so with his last few rounds Morgan succeeded in immobilising EA-500 which was subsequently destroyed in a follow up attack by Lt Cdr Gedge (XZ494) and Lt Cdr Braithwaite (ZA190). A third Puma AE-508 was spotted by Morgan & Leeming, but had to be left unharmed.

Later, on the evening of 23/05/1982 ZA192 this time piloted by Lt Cdr Gordon Batt departed from HMS Hermes for a toss-bombing attack on Stanley Airport. ZA192 was seen to explode either just before or on hitting the sea close to position 50deg 35Min South, 56Deg 15Min West. Lt Cdr Batt was killed.

hunder.

Thank you Sir

The idea is to put together info related to British Planes lost , either in Combat or other type of accidents during the conflict -

Thunder : Could you bring to the Forum the list that you have , that way we will have a starting point -
Can we also bring the known Triple A positions as of May 01 -

Thank You -

Thunder Condottiere states that the plane shown in the photos was damage on that first week of the conflict , it well may bee the one shot down later in the month -
Thunder :
I see what you say , Triple A at Darwin claims hit the plane ( damage only ) but then lost when reaching the Carrier -

Enrique,

I hope this helps:

Condottiere

Thank You Sir

Lt Cdr Gordon Batt -Rest in Peace -

So we now have the Airplane , lost in Combat but with two different accounts about it :

- Lost after atacking Stanley ( Condottiere's Records )
- Lost after atacking Darwin ( Thunder's records)

Thunder can you post your records in this forum please -

---------- Post added at 06:16 ---------- Previous post was at 06:11 ----------

When we mention a Person by his name for the first time , who has died in combat , as Ken ( Grifith 911 has done ) I sugest , a brieff mention to the day of his death or a Rest in Peace say - As a respectfull way to Honor a Soldier that has died for his Country -

Thunder were are you ? You need to see the link with Harrier numbers that Ken brought to us and compare it to your list -

Ken:
Do you have any info regarding an order being given (june, 10th) not to destroy Stanley runway because you wanted it operable as soon as we surrend?
did you manage to know C130 incoming route? If located did you send a PAC on the return path? Do you think we were just lucky not to get more C130 shot down?

No I'm sorry, I can't help you with the 10 June order. With regards to the C130 inbound/outbound routes, no we did not know them...or I was not aware that we knew them.

I don't think you were lucky that more C130 were not downed. You were very skilful at avoiding our SAM traps. You won that game of 'Cat & Mouse' completely.

----

Tanoarg.

I agree, the patches on the horizontal tail plane section would also appear to be repairs. I regret that I am unable to confirm if these apparent repairs were also made as a result of the attack on the helicopters on the 23/05/1982.

However it may be worth noting that there exists some contemporary BBC video of this aircraft ZA192 returning to Hermes following the attack on Stanley Airport on 01/05/1982 and although I have not seen it in many years I do distinctly remember the aircraft having only the one hole in the vertical fin section, therefore it is possible that this aircraft may have been struck again at a later date.

Hi Ken

Someone in this forum , has posted info regarding how was it that they brought the C 130 at night , guiding them with a lasser pistol or something like that - Let me see who was that one -

Gracias Enrique

Regarding your post #232 Derribo/Shoot Down Capitán Gustavo García Cuerva.

I found this in one of my books and I thought you might like to see it, if you have not done so already. It is an FAA air safety poster drawn by (according to the Argentine press) Capitán Gustavo García Cuerva.

Quote: "On May 16th two pairs of Sea Harriers from No. 800 squadron carried out bomb and cannon attacks on two ships. One aircraft collected a bullet hole in its tail".

I have a link to a site where this is written. Will it help with this particular issue?

A correction to this information. Sea Harrier ZA192 crashed just after take-off and so did not take part in the toss-bombing attack on Stanley airport (by three other Sea Harriers) on 23 May.

Also the damage to the horizontal stabiliser of Sea Harrier ZA192 looks like it was caused by fragmentation from the (20mm?) cannon shell that pierced the tail. The damage shown in the photograph is an exit hole I think.

Dear forists British.

My point is as follows.

Establish with certainty what was the cause of the loss of aircraft not recognized by the UK as downed .-
On the other hand, that failed too many airplanes were out of service.
I noticed that there are no accurate reports on the causes of accidents .-
I understand that there must be in place new procedures for pilots to avoid repeating them .-
I apologize for the translation .-
My compliments to those who fell in battle .-
I have operated anti aircraft weapons in the Army in the capital of the islands throughout the conflict .-
Greetings

Saludos

To Our British Guests, Historians and Veterans

We have some doubts regarding British Airplanes that even after been hit by some type of triple AAA , were able to make it to the Carriers -
Does someone have a list of Aircrafts that have made it back or not to the carrier after been damaged ?
An incomplete list (possibly) of damaged Harrier / Sea Harrier aircraft that returned to aircraft-carriers:

01/05/1982 Sea Harrier ZA192 Flight Lieutenant Dave Morgan RAF – Hit in vertical tail by 20mm cannon-fire over Stanley Airport but returned to HMS Hermes.

16/05/1982 Sea Harrier ZA191 Lieutenant Simon Hargreaves RN – Hit in the tail by small-arms fire after a cannon attack on the Bahai Buen Suceso but returned to HMS Hermes.

21/05/1982 Sea Harrier ZA190 Lieutenant Steve Thomas RN – Hit in nose radio avionics bay near Puerto Mitre (Port Howard) by small-arms fire but returned to HMS Invincible.

31/05/1982 Harrier XV789 Wing commander Peter Squire RAF – Damaged in cockpit area and engine during rocket-attack against Stanley Airport but returned to HMS Hermes.

31/05/1982 Harrier XZ997 Flight Lieutenant Mark Hare RAF – Damaged in rocket-attack against Stanley Airport but returned to HMS Hermes.

09/06/1982 Harrier XZ997 Flight Lieutenant Murdo MacLeod RAF – Hit in wing and fuselage hydraulic lines by shell splinters during rocket-attack on 155mm gun positions near Sapper Hill and Mount Longdon but returned to HMS Hermes.

10/06/1982 Harrier XV778 Flight Lieutenant Murdo MacLeod RAF – Hit in cockpit by small-arms fire during cluster-bomb attack on positions west of Stanley but returned to HMS Hermes.

11/06/1982 Harrier XZ992 Wing commander Peter Squire RAF – Damaged by small-arms round passing through cockpit during attack against positions near Mount Longdon but returned to HMS Hermes.

12/06/1982 Harrier XW919 Flight Lieutenant Murdo MacLeod RAF – Hit in rear fuselage hot-air duct near Sapper Hill by small-arms fire that caused fire in rear avionics bay when landing aboard HMS Hermes.
