When USS Milwaukee was returned to the U.S. Navy in 1949 after being loaned to the Soviet Union for 5 years, one official said it was the dirtiest ship he had ever seen. The rusty ship smelled of stale fish and was full of rats, lice, and empty vodka bottles.
