FNSS and PT. Pindad completes the conceptual design of Modern Medium Weight Tank (MMWT)

FNSS of Turkey and PT. Pindad of Indonesia have advanced on their Joint Development Modern Medium Weight Tank (MMWT) project. The conceptual design of MMWT has been completed and will be revealed during Indo Defense 2016, International Tri-Service Defence Expo & Forum, from 2 – 5 November at the Jakarta, Indonesia.

Turkey and Indonesia initiated the project to develop MMT in 2014. The production of the first prototype has already started. FNSS and PT Pindad make up the prime contractors of the project, whose intellectual property rights will be owned by the two countries.

MMWT design comprises advanced ballistic and mine protection with broad range of fire power, from close support of infantry to anti-armour. MMWT’s precision direct fire capability ensures required lethality with an outstanding tactical and strategic mobility. Rear configuration power pack of the vehicle is combined with advanced electronic controlled systems and heavy duty suspension system.

The vehicle’s new generation engine supplies adequate power, coupled with a fully automatic electronic controlled transmission, which results in a minimum of 20 hp/ton ratio, depending on the configurable protection system. MMWT gets its advanced mobility capability from 6 wheeled suspension system built on torsion bars with double pinned tracks.

Power pack of the vehicle is equipped with high capacity cooling pack and fuel tanks. The cooling pack is cooled by an intelligent software driven hydraulic fan for optimum torque extraction and fuel economy, and two separate fuel tanks provide a minimum operating range of 450 km. An auxiliary power unit enables turret operation when vehicle engine is not running, by charging the battery system. Advanced battery monitoring system is also equipped for optimum power management and Silent Watch capabilities.

Interior of the vehicle is engineered carefully considering ergonomics of crew and different tactical and battlefield conditions including driving, firing and ammunition load and unload. Special type of driver seat enables operator to have adequate field of view with accessibility to all cabin equipment.

MMWT comprises state of art modern technology platform with superior fire power supported with battlefield management and laser warning systems, providing tactical awareness to the commander. It will have high end mine and ballistic protection in its class and in this sense MMWT guarantees required fire support against battlefield threads with speed of response at a very short notice, providing superior survivability and mobility on the battlefield.

MMWT brings new technologies and innovative fighting skills to the battlefield. MMWT direct-fire combat roles may include:

- Combat operations against medium and light armour, including; IFVs, APCs, reconnaissance vehicles, combat support vehicles, armoured engineering vehicles, artillery equipment, recovery vehicles and logistic support vehicles.

- Fire support tasks against; dismounted infantry, logistic support sites and defensive positions.

For these roles, the MMWT combines an effective direct-fire weapon with a capable sighting system. This combination enables MMWT to achieve first round hits at battle at long ranges. The tank can fire both AP and HE ammunitions, as well can employ secondary weapons such as 50-cal or 7.62 mm MGs for medium-range area shoots and close-range self-defence.

Although medium tanks are seen as a no-match for heavy main battle tanks (MBTs) in the 60-70 tonnes range, utilizing its stealth and mobility, MMWT can be tasked against MBTs in specific scenarios, such as mobile screening operations, flank attacks, ambush attacks, emergency delaying operations and support of friendly MBTs.

Moreover, as MMWTs tend to be more easily transported and, once on the battlefield, have very good tactical mobility and these factors, together with a reasonable level of armour and capable weapons make them suitable for other roles including:

- Rear area security tasks against light mobile or air-landed forces,
- Counter penetration roles,
- Delaying operations,
- Combat recce tasks,
- Screening operations,
- Escorting of light armour or soft-skinned vehicle convoys, and
- Deep penetration operations in the enemy’s rear areas.

This year Rheinmetall is showcasing a demonstrator of a 105mm medium battle tank based on a modified Marder 1 chassis. While the demonstrator is equipped with the 105mm Hitfact I turret, the new Marder Medium Tank RI (Republic of Indonesia) offered to the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) features a new Leonardo (Oto Melara) Hitfact II turret, with a 105mm/L52 gun as main armament. Both the Marder 1 chassis and the Hitfact II turret are proven, previously fielded, well-supported subsystems.

The new Marder Medium Tank RI will be equipped with an electrically stabilized threeman turret which can fire any standard NATO 105mm round. The commander and gunner each have their own independent day and night sighting systems with laser rangefinders, providing a hunter/killer capability for the crew. The commander and gunner are both able to operate the main and secondary armament, which can be reloaded from the safety of the fighting compartment.

Due to its high mobility the Marder Medium Tank RI can be deployed together with the Leopard 2 main battle tank or in support of other armoured fighting vehicles. Thanks to its lighter weight, it provides the tactical versatility vital for dominating current and future battlefields and other scenarios, e.g. urban warfare.

This new combat vehicle demonstrates once again Rheinmetall’s role as a driving force in modern fighting vehicle concepts and technologies. In 2012 the Ministry of Defence in Jakarta contracted with Rheinmetall to supply the Indonesian Army with tracked armoured vehicles, logistical support and ammunition. Besides 103 Leopard 2 MBTs, Rheinmetall is supplying Indonesia with 42 upgraded Marder 1A3 infantry fighting vehicles, 11 armoured recovery and combat engineering vehicles, together with the accompanying documentation, training resources and logistical services. The order also encompasses an initial supply of practice and service ammunition.

The combat performance upgrade programme for the Indonesian variant of the Leopard 2A4 includes – depending on which of the two versions, the Leopard 2A 4+ or Leopard 2 RI – climate control technology, enhanced ballistic protection, conversion from a hydraulic to an electric turret drive, an auxiliary power unit, and installation of a reversing camera.

In addition, Rheinmetall is modifying the 120mm smoothbore gun of the RI version with a programming kit that will enable it to fire the new programmable DM11 multipurpose round.

Rheinmetall and Steyr Mannlicher offer new RS556 assault rifle system

Two of Europe’s most respected defence companies, Rheinmetall and Steyr Mannlicher, have joined forces to manufacture and market the RS556 modular assault rifle. This German-Austrian cooperation project adds a key item to Rheinmetall’s growing array of infantry products.

The RS556 is based on the highly regarded STM556, which Steyr Mannlicher first unveiled in 2012. Outstanding modularity characterizes this easy-to-use, future-proof 5.56mm x 45 cal. weapon.

Rheinmetall and Steyr Mannlicher are offering the RS556 assault rifle as a jointly produced product, made in Germany, with a German valued added share of 60%. Among other things, the two partners thus have their sights set on the German market. This innovative weapon is a possible candidate for the new "System Sturmgewehr Bundeswehr": the German armed forces intend to replace their standard G36 assault rifle with a more advanced system starting in 2019.

Rheinmetall and Steyr Mannlicher each have well over a century of experience in developing and manufacturing infantry weapons. The RS556 project underscores both companies’ commitment to supplying military and security services around the globe with reliable, future-proof, state-of-the-art systems and equipment.

Featuring an adjustable short-stroke gas piston system and rotating bolt, the gas-operated RS556 is based on the tried-and-tested Steyr Mannlicher AUG, or Universal Army Rifle, a design concept that has proven itself in decades of service on every continent.

With a 16" barrel (406 mm) and a fully loaded, 30-round magazine, the RS556 weighs around 4.2 kilograms, just over 9 pounds. The adjustable-length light-weight stock clicks into seven different positions, meaning that operators can adjust the RS556 to match their individual equipment profile in optimum fashion.

In a matter of seconds and without tools, the hammer-forged barrel can be easily exchanged. This means that the RS556 can be readily modified for various missions.

A number of standard barrel lengths are available (14.5", 16", 18" and 20"); however, customer-specific barrel and rifling lengths can be easily created.

The RS556 features several standard and optional NATO accessory rails with receiver systems designed in accordance with MIL-STD-1913, STANAG 2324 and STANAG 4694. This means that the weapon can be fitted with various optics and night observation devices or laser light modules. A 40mm grenade launcher can also be mounted on the new assault rifle. Moreover, the RS556 is compatible with Rheinmetall’s modular "Future Soldier – Expanded System" (IdZ-ES), and can also be connected to other soldier systems.

A special breech system with an emergency operation feature ensures that the weapon always functions reliably even in extreme operating conditions, e.g. in severely hot and cold environments.

Mepa que es para intentar embocarselas a los "yonis" fijate que muchos últimamente tienden a ser estéticamente similares a un AR-14/M-4 customizados ( :rolleyes: pudiendo hacer tantas otras cosas...formalmente hablando) no se, hablo a boca de jarro...pero supongo que debe ser requisito el parecido estético con el niño mimado de Armalite.
