The President of the Republic of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, ordered the opening of a new outpost of the Joint Task Force (FTC) of the Paraguayan Army in the department of Canindeyú, in the northeast of the country, bordering Brazil.

“The issue of security is very sensitive for us; there will be no development without security. This will be the seventh Pacification Subarea that is part of the work being carried out by the Joint Task Force. Our country is a place of hardworking people, and in response to the insecurity that emerged about 11 years ago, the Joint Task Force was created. With its presence in the departments of Concepción, San Pedro, and Amambay, it has helped improve the quality of life of the people,” President Peña pointed out in a press conference.

This opening in Canindeyú responds to a growing escalation of violence between drug trafficking gangs that has become evident in recent weeks. The department is considered part of the red security zone between Paraguay and Brazil due to the influence of Brazilian armed groups such as the First Capital Command (PCC) and the Red Command.

The Minister of National Defense, General (Retired) Óscar González, also spoke about what this subdivision of the FTC in Canindeyú will entail.

‘We will have a strong presence; it will not be a tepid or symbolic presence in any way. It will be a real presence. Surely, we will take a few days to organize the transfer of forces and comply with the commander-in-chief’s order. We are reorganizing the structure we have in the northern zone of the country, enhancing some details to reinforce the technological aspect,’ Minister González pointed out.

For the time being, the Armed Forces will not increase their number of deployed personnel in the different departments, but there will be a reorganization. The Joint Task Force is a unit of the Armed Forces supported by members of the National Police and agents of the National Anti-Drug Secretariat (SENAD).
