In recent days, it was announced that the United States Navy has received a new Virginia-class attack submarine named New Jersey (SSN 796). The submarine is the eleventh of its class delivered by Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) and the twenty-third built as part of the collaboration agreement with General Dynamics Electric Boat.

Construction of the New Jersey began in 2019, and it was subsequently named in November 2021 at NNS. It is expected to enter service by the end of this year. Additionally, this is the fifth of the Virginia Block IV version and the first to be designed from the keel up to accommodate mixed-gender crews. It is worth metioning that it completed sea trials earlier this year off the coast of Virginia.

The latest of this class, the USS Massachusetts, was launched last February for the United States Navy and became the 25th of its kind to enter service. The Virginia class, also known as the VA class or 774 class, comprises fast-attack nuclear submarines designed for a wide spectrum of missions both at sea and in the littoral environment. Its design was intended to provide a more cost-effective alternative to the Seawolf-class attack submarines. The U.S. Navy plans to incorporate 66 units of the Virginia class with the intention of replacing the veteran Los Angeles-class submarines.
