The earliest Grumman-built fighters featured retractable landing gear that pilots raised and lowered using a hand crank inside the cockpit. On occasion, an aviator forgot to lower the gear on landing, with the result shown here. One story that circulated during the 1930s was that during one wheels up landing, a Grumman fighter flipped over on its back. As the crash trucks sped to the scene, rescuers noticed the landing gear being lowered, the pilot furiously cranking them down as he waited to be helped from the cockpit.
