Within the framework of the analysis process of the future Wheeled Self-Propelled Artillery Vehicle selection program, the Logistics Command Material Headquarters (C Mat/COLOG) of the Brazilian Army announced yesterday, Monday, April 29th, the selection of the “Atmos 155 mm” Wheeled Self-Propelled Artillery Combat Vehicle.

This howitzer, mounted on a Tatra T-815 6×6 chassis, is manufactured by the Israeli company Elbit Systems Land Ltd. According to the official statement from the Brazilian Army, the Atmos 6×6 met all the absolute requirements established in the future Wheeled Self-Propelled Artillery Vehicle program.

The acquisition of this system aims primarily at modernizing and increasing the fire support capability of the Brazilian Army’s Field Artillery. According to the planned schedule, the Israeli company will deliver the first two (2) Atmos 6×6 vehicles from the sample batch upon contract signing, within a period of 12 (twelve) months.

Once arrived, these vehicles will undergo technical and operational evaluations in Brazil. After passing the tests, COLOG will sign the main contract for the supply of another 34 (thirty-four) units to be delivered in annual batches until 2034.

It is worth noting that among the units considered by the Brazilian Army to replace the older M109 Self-Propelled Artillery Combat Vehicles were the Chinese Norinco SH15 6×6 howitzers, the French-origin CAESAR 6×6 system, and the Zuzana 2 8×8, designed by the Slovak company ZTS Special.

About the ATMOS 6×6:
The ATMOS is a 155 mm / 52 caliber truck-mounted howitzer that offers the advantages of superior firepower, improved mobility, and rapid response time. Highly adaptable, the modular ATMOS system can be mounted on both 6×6 and high-mobility 8×8 trucks. ATMOS provides fire support for all types of missions and can easily interface with customers’ existing C4I systems.

One of its main features is the incorporation of an integrated electronic suite, coupled with an automatic laying system and an automatic loading system. Weighing 22 tons, the AMOS has an effective range of 30 – 41 km, notable for its maximum travel speed of 100 km/h.
