"De repente,me llamó McEVILLY "Ahí esta nuestro PI (el punto inicial de la pasada de bombardeo).En ese mismo instante,vi lo que parecía nuestra "caja" de aviones,delante nuestro,y también el objetivo.Estaba realmente exultante pues nuestra navegación había sido impecable a pesar de la mala visibilidad.Los A-20 que volaban delante de nosotros estaban recibiendo de la lindo,y era tan espantoso lo que veía que era como si nos pasara a nosotros mismos.Una cortina de 1500 a 2000 disparos de la antiaérea pesada se les vino encima justamente cuando lanzaban sus bombas, y tres aparatos quedaron envueltos en llamas al recibir impactos directos.

McEVILLY estaba concentrado mirando por el visor de bombardeo y yo eché un rápido vistazo a mis puntos.Aún estaban allí y parecían en buenas condiciones,aunque mi propio avión estaba repleto de agujeros.

Una vez hubimos soltado las bombas,realicé un profundo picado hacia a la izquierda y tuve aún la oportunidad de echar una última ojeada.Lo que vi ciertamente no me gustó".

"Había por lo menos 2000 proyectiles de antiaérea pesada llenan do el cielo que nos rodeaba,y las trazadoras de la FLAK ligera subían de todas partes.Decidí dirigirme directamente hacía el suelo y salir lo más rápido posible,pero a medida que descendíamos ganaba intensidad el fuego antiaéreo.

"Fue aproximadamente en este momento cuando sentí que los pedales del timón de dirección perdían toda autoridad,e informé a los chicos que me había quedado sin control sobre el timón.El A-20 siguió volando maravillosamente bien a pesar de todo,y estábamos casi llegando al banco de nubes cuando HYROAD me dijo que uno de nuestros aviones parecía haber sido alcanzado o ,al menos,se había salido de la formación.

"Algo importante que he olvidado mencionar es que tuvimos una espléndida vista del objetivo cuando viramos y que habíamos logrado un impacto directo.Sin embargo,en este momento estábamos demasiados ocupados como para alegrarnos de ello".

Hola Biguá, creo que esta foto de los Grumman F6F 5K corresponde a aparatos usados para estudiar los efectos de las explosiones nucleares en el atolón de Bikini. Es de notar las colas de diferentes colores de los aparatos de las filas de atrás.

11 September 1953: At Naval Ordinance Test Station China Lake, the experimental Philco/General Electric XAAM-N-7 “Sidewinder” heat-seeking air-to-air missile scored its first “hit” when it passed within 2 feet (0.6 meters) of a radio-controlled Grumman F6F-5K Hellcat. The missile was fired from a Douglas AD-4 Skyraider flown by Lieutenant Commander A.S. (Al) Yesensky, United States Navy. The Sidewinder was later redesignated AIM-9. It entered service in 1956 as the AIM-9B and has been a primary fighter weapon for 58 years.

Future Astronaut Wally Schirra flew many of the early test flights at NOTS China Lake. On one occasion, a Sidewinder came back at him, and only by skill and luck was he able to evade it.
