The Swedish Armed Forces have taken a new step in the modernization of their ground surveillance and target acquisition capabilities with the purchase of new Arthur counter-battery radars. The agreement with Saab, valued at approximately SEK 1.1 billion, provides for deliveries in 2027 and will include the latest version of the system, capable of detecting and warning of incoming indirect fire at distances of up to 100 kilometers, with integration onto vehicles that ensure essential tactical mobility on contemporary battlefields.

It should be added that this latest agreement includes options for additional systems and support over a 15-year period, with the possibility for allied countries to join the program. According to Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s Surveillance business area, the incorporation of Arthur radars represents a substantial increase in capability, strengthening the Swedish brigades’ ability to detect indirect fire and respond rapidly in highly complex scenarios.
The acquisition of the Arthur radars is part of a broader plan to modernize the various radar systems in service with the Swedish Armed Forces. Previously, in June, Sweden confirmed the purchase of additional Giraffe 4A radars from Saab. These are three-dimensional AESA air-surveillance systems capable of detecting aircraft, missiles, and drones, reinforcing tactical coverage and ensuring interoperability with other national platforms. These AESA radars represent a key technological leap in addressing modern aerial threats and further consolidate Saab’s position as a strategic supplier to Swedish defense.
Finally, in parallel, Sweden also completed the purchase of TPY-4 radars from Lockheed Martin. These long-range air-surveillance systems are designed to detect ballistic and aerial threats at great distances. Their incorporation complements the coverage provided by the Giraffe 4A and offers strategic redundancy, expanding response capabilities in both regional and global scenarios.
