As part of the efforts carried out to repatriate the remains of soldiers who fell in the Korean War between 1950 and 1953, China has for the first time deployed its most advanced Y-20B transport aircraft to South Korea, thus taking over the role previously carried out by the Y-20A model used for this task. The aircraft returned to its country yesterday, escorted by a squadron of four J-20 stealth fighters from the People’s Liberation Army Air Force, carrying on board the remains of 12 Chinese servicemen (also referred to as martyrs in local media).

Expanding on details, the mission carried out by the Y-20B constituted the thirteenth that China has sent to the Korean Peninsula to repatriate the remains of fallen soldiers, having begun on April 20 with the aircraft’s departure from an unspecified airport located in the central part of the country. Upon arriving in South Korean territory, the aircraft remained at Incheon International Airport to complete its task, and upon departure its trajectory was followed to Taoxian International Airport, where it received a water cannon salute.

In particular, Beijing designed a special emblem for the recently completed mission, composed of several elements: a formation of aircraft led by the Y-20B itself and complemented by the aforementioned J-20 stealth fighters, a representation of the volunteer soldiers sent to the Korean War, an insignia of the People’s Volunteer Army, white doves symbolizing peace, and inscriptions reading “Heroes 1950” and “Return Home 2026.”

Beyond the recently completed mission, it is important to recall that since 2015 China has been sending aircraft annually to South Korea to repatriate remains, with data indicating that up to 1,023 fallen soldiers have been recovered in coordination with Seoul. Since 2020, these flights had been carried out by the previously mentioned Y-20A transport aircraft, which in itself constituted a milestone for the country as a domestically produced platform.

Following that line, it should be noted that the Y-20B was publicly unveiled for the first time last year, specifically during the celebrations marking the 80th Anniversary of Victory held in China. On that occasion, within the framework of the large-scale military parade organized for the event, a formation of three aircraft of this model was observed flying over the streets, already fully equipped with engines produced by domestic companies, alongside three aircraft of the original Y-20A variant.

Briefly reviewing the characteristics that differentiate both variants, the issue of engines is a central point, considering that the Y-20B replaces the Russian D-30KP-2 and Chinese WS-18 engines present in the Y-20A with the new WS-20 turbofan engines, which offer higher performance and smaller dimensions. In fact, according to descriptions by state-affiliated media in China, this first flight abroad has served as an opportunity to definitively validate the capabilities of the platform powered by these systems. If confirmed, this would facilitate the People’s Liberation Army Air Force accelerating the deployment of these aircraft on a larger scale.

In addition to the engine aspect, it should also be considered that the new Y-20B integrates a new electrical power supply system and hydraulic control system, complemented by improvements in navigation and communications systems. According to local sources, this series of advances allows it to operate in strategic airlift missions in regions of China with high levels of geographic complexity, many of them far removed from the country’s main population centers.

Finally, although no further details have been provided, it is worth noting that Chinese analysts have already begun to suggest the possibility that the design could serve as the basis for the future development of new variants. Among the possibilities mentioned are a potential aerial refueling variant, another for paratrooper transport, and an airborne early warning version, which would correspond to the KJ-3000 models.
