One of the Royal Navy's most audacious and feared commanders during the Napoleonic Wars, <strong>he went on to command the Chilean, Brazilian and Greek navies, helping these countries in their fight for independence</strong>.</p><p></p><p>His life and exploits served as inspiration for the naval fiction of 20th century novelists C.S. Forester, who created the character of Capt Horatio Hornblower around him, and Patrick O’Brian, who drew on Cochrane’s tactics for his naval stories featuring Captain Jack Aubrey.</p><p></p><p>He is buried in the Nave of the Abbey. Lugar de reposo de Lord Thomas Cochrane, comandante de la primera Escuadra Nacional fundada durante el gobierno de Bernardo O´Higgins labor antecedida por José Miguel Carrera en la patria vieja a través de buques comprados a Estados Unidos, Inglaterra y capturados a España. Esta primera flota es organizada por don José Ignacio Zenteno en 1817, zarpando de Valparaíso en 1818 para apoyar los esfuerzos aliados de Independencia del Virreinato del Perú encabezados por el General San Martín en el flanco sur, y Simón Bolivar por el norte.</p><p></p><p>Saludos</p></blockquote><p></p>
