She was flying in the number two position.According to T/Sgt. Lindley G. Miller, right waist gunner in the lead B-24, "She was hit by a FW-190 in the attack ....the main tanks burst into flame, after which the ship went into a spin to the left. After dropping approximately five thousand feet, the ship exploded". Thanks to this coincidence Leo lived and made a series of shots of the loss of the aircraft. He said about this picture: "I felt guilty, helplessly snapping a picture while the men were burning inside. It happened so fast they didn't have much of a chance, I had photographed a picture of death, with the crew burning inside. It happened so quickly that they had little chance of surviving."</blockquote>
