The SZCZESNIAK Special Vehicles company will provide Saudi Arabia with armored tugs, which are used to evacuate vehicles over 32 tons from the battlefield. For now, it will build two units, and if they pass the tests of the Middle East army, they will sign a contract even for several hundred vehicles.</p><p></p><p><img src="https://zbrojni.blob.core.windows.net/pzdata2/Images/42831" alt="" class="fr-fic fr-dii fr-draggable " style="" /></p><p></p><p>Special Vehicles is one of the leading manufacturers of specialized vehicles in the country. In 2007, it received funding (50 percent) from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education to develop a prototype wheeled evacuation and technical rescue vehicle - KWZT, which was codenamed "Mamut" for the needs of the Polish Armed Forces. Generally, the car is intended to be used to quickly tow away damaged Rosomak transporters from the battlefield. In the event that the necessary repair work had to be carried out on site, the vehicle was equipped with a crane capable of lifting the weight of up to twelve tons.</p><p></p><p>The prototype, weighing 37 tons of Mammoth, was built in 2009. The company showed it for the first time in public at the largest armaments fair in the world - Eurosatory 2010 in Paris. The interest in the vehicle was great. According to Grzegorz Szczesniak, the president of the company from Bielsko-Biała, countries from the Persian Gulf region have been particularly closely watched by Mamut. That is why in 2011 the tug was exhibited at the IDEX exhibition organized in the United Arab Emirates. There the first contractor appeared.</p><p></p><p>- Representatives of the armed forces of Saudi Arabia were looking for an armored tug for their land forces, because they do not have this type of vehicle in service - says Szczesniak. - However, they were interested in slightly different vehicles than the Mammoth. They wanted far lighter wagons that could cope with the bogged down in heavy, sandy terrain, vehicles weighing a minimum of 32 tons - he explains.</p><p></p><p><img src="https://zbrojni.blob.core.windows.net/pzdata2/Images/42834" alt="" class="fr-fic fr-dii fr-draggable " style="" /></p><p></p><p>The Middle Eastern mogul watched the Mammoth several more times at international fairs, testing other solutions at the same time. Finally, at the end of last year, Mamut also hit the desert training ground. Although it did not fully meet the technical requirements of the armed forces of Saudi Arabia, it did so well that in the spring of this year the Saud decided to sign a contract for the construction of a test batch of vehicles, i.e. two units, 100% meeting their expectations.</p><p></p><p>Work on such KWZT-2 (the car has no proper name) began in August. The prototype chassis was presented in September at the arms trade fair in Kielce. At that time, however, representatives of SZCZESNIAK talked about him only as a construction intended for Saudi Arabia, not boasting of the signed contract. First, they wanted to, as they admit today, to complete the first stage of the contract, i.e. factory tests. They closed them a few days ago.</p><p></p><p>Now the car will be equipped by a foreign subcontractor with a five-person, four-door armored cabin, having resistance to bullets, artillery fragments and detonation of charges at level 1 according to NATO STANAG 4569 standard.</p><p></p><p>In January, the completed tug is to be handed over to the Saudi army for trials and tests. If they are successful, the Polish company may receive an order to provide the Saudi Armed Forces with several hundred KWZT-2. Although SZCZESNIAK and Sauds do not disclose the terms of the contract for the trial batch, it can be assumed that the contract for their serial production will be worth several hundred million dollars.</p><p></p><p>The KWZT-2 is expected to weigh about 26 tons, so it will be eleven tons lighter than KWZT-1 built according to the expectations of our army. Although the vehicle drives the Tatra engine with a power of "only" 300 kW, its power factor is 12 kW/ton.
