Lockheed To Support Brazil Air Surveillance Radars By antonie boessenkool RIO DE JANIERO - Lockheed signed a $1.6 million contract with the Brazilian Air Force for support services for six long-range TPS-77 air surveillance radars Brazil uses to monitor airspace in the Amazon, Lockheed announced at the Latin America Aerospace and Defense conference. Lockheed will provide technical support for the six transportable radar systems installed between 2000 and 2005 and train Brazilian technicians in the radars' maintenance under the one-year contract. Lockheed made the radars but was not the prime contractor for their installation. Although the contract is relatively small for the world's biggest defense contractor, company representatives at the show said it could provide an opening into the Brazilian market for aerospace surveillance and air traffic control radars. Brazil has about 30 radars, mainly used for commercial air traffic control, but also for monitoring military and commercial air traffic, said William Schmidt, director of radar systems business development at Lockheed. Colombia also uses Lockheed-made radars. "With this show, we've been talking to a lot of customers, and I think this is going to be one of our biggest markets in the next five years," Schmidt said. Lockheed predicts that Latin American countries will need to procure 40 radars over the next three to five years, he added. Schmidt said potential customers at the show have told Lockheed other radars will need to be upgraded. Also, large swaths of Brazil and other Latin American countries have no aerospace monitoring coverage. Though budgets for equipment like radars are likely to shrink due to the worldwide economic slowdown, "the need's there," Schmidt said. Lockheed also chose to showcase its Aegis weapon system at the show and discussed applying the system to Brazil's modernization plans for its frigates. Lockheed had discussed the system with Brazilian officials, but Brazil had not yet expressed an interest in Aegis, Lockheed executives said.
