Ernest D. Cody (who piloted the L-8 on the USS Hornet delivery mission above) and Ens. Charles E. Adams took-off in the L-8 from Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay on a routine anti-submarine patrol. </p><p>After about an hour, Cody radioed that they were going to investigate an oil slick. That was the last message heard from the L-8. </p><p>Later that day, the blimp was spotted south of San Francisco up against a beachside cliff. The airship became dislodged, drifted inland, and floated down in Daly City. </p><p>But no one was aboard the L-8 and the fate of Cody and Adams has never been determined.</p><p></p><p></p><p>Corsair
