As a Cold War Naval fleet defender, the F6D-1 would patrol well away from the carrier attack group to loiter, and defend against approaching enemy bombers. Unfortunately, the F6D-1 Missileer was caught up between the outgoing Eisenhower administration, and the incoming Kennedy administration. The Missileer program was canceled in December 1961.
