With the retirement of Admiral Zumwalt on 1 July 1974, the Sea Control Ship (SCS) fell out of favor. This essentially eliminated the need for a small VSTOL fighter. Rockwell only tested the vertical lift mode and this hurt the XFV-12A concept. It should have been flown in the conventual mode first, and then tested in the STOVL mode- vertical lift is inefficient. Both AV-8B Harrier and F-35B JSF use the STOVL mode. An uprated engine would have greatly improved VSTOL performance. As a supersonic STOVL, both the USN and USMC could have used the aircraft.
