As part of its sustained deployment in the waters off the Horn of Africa, the Navy of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLAN) carried out new training exercises against piracy- and terrorism-related threats in the Gulf of Aden, as part of the activities of the 48th Escort Task Force deployed in the region.

According to information released by official Chinese sources, the exercises were aimed at improving response capability in emergency situations, as well as coordination among the naval units that make up the task force. This type of training included simulated boarding scenarios, protection of civilian vessels, and the neutralization of asymmetric threats, in line with the characteristic risks of this strategic area.
The Gulf of Aden constitutes one of the world’s main maritime corridors, connecting the Indian Ocean with the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, which makes it a key point for international trade. In this context, the Chinese naval presence in the region responds not only to the need to protect maritime traffic, but also to safeguard its growing economic interests in Africa and the Middle East.
Since the late 2000s, China has maintained regular deployments in this area in the form of escort groups, which has consolidated an almost permanent presence. As previously reported, the dispatch of the 48th Task Force is part of this long-term policy, which seeks to ensure the protection of commercial vessels and project naval capabilities in scenarios far from its shores.
At the same time, these operations are complemented by the infrastructure China maintains in the region, including its logistical base in Djibouti, which allows it to sustain prolonged deployments and improve its response capability in the event of contingencies. Following this point, this network reinforces the role of the Gulf of Aden as a key support point for the expansion of China’s maritime presence.
In this context, the recent maneuvers reflect not only the continuity of maritime security missions, but also the growing degree of professionalization and coordination of the Chinese Navy in long-range operations.
