Through a brief statement published on April 2, Textron announced that it has been awarded a new pre-production contract by the U.S. Marine Corps, formally setting in motion the purchase of the new Cottonmouth Advanced Reconnaissance Vehicle. According to the official description, the agreement is worth 450 million dollars and will cover the delivery of 16 new vehicles, three systems integration laboratories, and blast-resistant hulls.

Expanding on the details, it can be noted that the company will focus on manufacturing three different variants of the new Cottonmouth vehicle, namely the C4UAS, the 30 mm version, and the Logistics version. These are designs intended to operate from Marine Corps Expeditionary Bases, and with this first pre-production batch they will have to undergo a series of tests that will assess their mobility and adaptability, with the results determining a potential purchase of a larger number of vehicles.

Referring to this, Textron Senior Vice President of Air, Land and Sea Systems David Phillips stated: “Developed from the ground up in 2019 and shaped by customer needs, the Cottonmouth vehicle is ready to transform Marine Corps reconnaissance missions through its adaptability, mobility, and battlefield leadership capability. Textron Systems invested early in prototypes to reduce risk and increase warfighter operational maturity. The system design considers current mission requirements while employing a modular open systems architecture that facilitates future integration for Marine Corps needs (…)”

Briefly addressing the characteristics of each of these Cottonmouth variants, it can be mentioned that the C4UAS vehicles are designed to serve as operations centers in the field, equipped with different systems that allow them to maintain communication links with naval elements accompanying the deployment and to operate as a sensor node to increase command situational awareness. The second listed variant is configured as a platform capable of providing fire support and anti-armor capabilities for the advance of infantry troops, while the Logistics variant will operate as a supply and support vehicle in the field.

Finally, it is worth recalling that this vehicle acquisition is part of a broader program known as Force Design 2030, through which the Marine Corps seeks to modernize its ground combat capabilities and adapt them to potential high-end adversaries, moving away from the counterinsurgency focus seen in previous years. As an illustrative example of these efforts beyond the Cottonmouth vehicles mentioned so far, it is worth remembering that the U.S. Marine Corps recently announced that it will move forward with the establishment of a fleet of Polaris MRZR Alpha 6×6 vehicles equipped with new Scorpion mortar systems, with which it expects to obtain new indirect fire capabilities with a high degree of mobility.
