The arrival of the frigate Tamandaré (F200) in Rio de Janeiro, this Monday (16), marks a new chapter in the Tamandaré-class Frigate Program (PFCT) of the Brazilian Navy and symbolizes the consolidation of one of the most important naval projects currently underway in the country. After leaving the shipyard in Itajaí (SC), the vessel entered Guanabara Bay, being received by the frigate Defensora, in a moment full of significance for the Fleet.

More than the end of a journey, the arrival of the F200 represents the beginning of the final preparation phase before its official incorporation into the Brazilian Navy. The vessel will undergo final adjustments and ceremonial activities prior to the Armament Display Ceremony, scheduled for April 24, when it will be formally presented as an operational asset of the Naval Force.

As a product of the PFCT, the Tamandaré frigate inaugurates a new generation of escorts built in Brazil, consolidating the recovery of the national capability to design and produce high-complexity warships. From the cutting of the first steel plate in 2022 to the sea trials conducted throughout 2025, the program demonstrates the technological evolution and maturity of the Brazilian defense naval industry.

With approximately 107 meters in length and a displacement of around 3,500 tons, the F200 was designed to operate in multiple operational scenarios. Its multi-mission architecture allows it to be employed in anti-air, anti-submarine, and anti-surface warfare, as well as in patrol, escort, and protection missions of strategic infrastructure in the South Atlantic.

In the technological domain, the frigate incorporates state-of-the-art sensors, such as the Hensoldt TRS-4D AESA three-dimensional radar, capable of detecting and tracking multiple threats simultaneously. The combat system is managed by an advanced Combat Management System (CMS), developed by Atech in partnership with Atlas Elektronik, responsible for integrating sensors, weapons, and decision-support systems in real time.

The armament also reflects the platform’s qualitative leap. The Tamandaré will be equipped with the OTO Melara 76 mm Super Rapid naval gun, in addition to the Sea Ceptor (CAMM) surface-to-air missile system, which ensures point and local area defense against modern threats. In anti-surface warfare, the future integration of the MANSUP missile stands out, reinforcing national technological sovereignty.

Another relevant aspect of the program is the progress in the nationalization of systems and inputs. The participation of Brazilian companies, along with technology transfer, strengthens the Defense Industrial Base and expands the Navy’s logistical autonomy, a critical factor for sustaining prolonged operations.

Inserted within the context of protecting the so-called “Blue Amazon,” a maritime area of more than 5.7 million km², the Tamandaré frigate significantly enhances Brazil’s capacity for presence, monitoring, and control in strategic regions of the South Atlantic, in an increasingly competitive international environment.

The Armament Display Ceremony, scheduled for April, will represent not only the formal incorporation of the ship but also the consolidation of a new phase for Brazilian naval power. More than a modern platform, the Tamandaré symbolizes the recovery of capabilities, the strengthening of the national industry, and a long-term strategic vision oriented toward the country’s maritime sovereignty.
