Ukraine is reportedly interested in acquiring Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets from the Qatar Air Force in exchange for cooperation against Iranian drones, in a context where Kyiv is seeking to strengthen its air capabilities and expand its expertise in countering unmanned systems. This potential understanding between Ukraine and Qatar is framed within negotiations that combine the transfer of military equipment with technical assistance to address emerging threats.

According to information published by Intelligence Online, Ukraine has requested that Doha transfer used Mirage 2000-5 fighters in exchange for providing support in the development and operation of interceptor drones. However, talks between the two parties have reportedly been affected by disagreements regarding the aircraft fleet, slowing progress in anti-drone cooperation.

According to sources cited in the report, a small team of Ukrainian drone warfare specialists was recently sent to Qatar to assist in countering systems launched by Iran, although their work has been conditioned by the ongoing negotiations. In this regard, the outlet noted: “Ukraine has long been interested in these aircraft, as have other countries and intermediaries. However, Doha is currently ignoring Kyiv’s request. As a result, negotiations to strengthen Qatar’s anti-drone capabilities have reached a deadlock.”

Qatar’s fleet includes nine single-seat Mirage 2000-5EDA and three two-seat Mirage 2000-5DDA aircraft, acquired in the 1990s, which have been offered for sale for several years without any deals being finalized. These aircraft correspond to a modernized version of the Mirage 2000-5, equipped with the RDY radar and MICA air-to-air missiles, enhancing their ability to detect and intercept aerial targets.

Previous attempts to transfer these fighters have not been successful, as was the case with the French private company ARES, which initially showed interest but ceased operations in 2023 due to financial problems. Subsequently, Indonesia evaluated the purchase of 12 units for approximately $790 million as a temporary solution while progressing with the incorporation of Dassault Rafale aircraft, although it ultimately canceled the deal in February 2024.

In parallel, Ukraine already operates Mirage 2000 fighters supplied by France, which would facilitate the integration of additional units from Qatar. As part of French military assistance, between 12 and 20 aircraft are expected to be delivered, although one of them was lost during the summer of 2025, according to available reports.

Ukrainian authorities have highlighted the importance of this platform in countering Russian air attacks, including cruise missiles and drones. In this context, Kyiv recently stated: “The French side is preparing to transfer Mirage 2000 aircraft to Ukraine (…) We thank France for its constant political and military support,” referring to talks held between Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and French Minister Catherine Vautrin.

In current operations, the Mirage 2000 aircraft in service with Ukraine employ MICA and Magic 2 air-to-air missiles, as well as AASM Hammer guided bombs for strikes against ground targets. These capabilities have been used in the ongoing conflict, where the threat posed by unmanned systems has taken on a central role.

In this context, Ukraine has also expanded its international cooperation in counter-drone efforts, including the deployment of specialists abroad. President Volodymyr Zelensky recently confirmed the deployment of more than 200 experts to the Middle East and the Gulf region to assist in protection against Iranian Shahed drones, highlighting the experience gained by Kyiv in dealing with such threats.
