In a recent interview, the President of Peru, José María Balcázar, categorically announced the selection and subsequent purchase of F-16 Block 70 fighters from the United States. The president’s remarks, delivered during an interview on the program “Hablemos Claro,” appear to bring an end to the prolonged selection process aimed at replacing the Peruvian Air Force’s current Mirage 2000 and MiG-29 fleets.

Although a decision had been expected by mid-last year, it was repeatedly delayed over the following months. Prior to the president’s statement, three candidates had been shortlisted by the Peruvian Air Force: the Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 70, the Saab Gripen E/F, and the Dassault Rafale.

In the president’s own words, when asked about relations with the People’s Republic of China, he stated that Peru must maintain the best possible relations with the Asian giant, as well as with the United States—its longstanding regional partner—within which context the decision to select the new Vipers would be framed.

To that extent, although he did not provide further details, Balcázar noted that the previous administration had signed agreements with the U.S. government, and that this course of action would continue, as the decision is of an institutional nature.

Finally, regarding officially known details authorized by the U.S. Department of State in September 2025, the proposed sale package—under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program—consists of twelve (12) F-16 Block 70 fighters, of which ten (10) will be single-seat F-16C variants and two (2) will be two-seat F-16D variants.

The deal, valued at US$ 3.42 billion, also includes associated services and logistical support. Additionally, it covers the provision of armament, notably AIM-120C-8 long-range air-to-air missiles—the most advanced version available for export customers—complemented by twelve (12) AIM-9X Block II Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missiles, along with M61A1 cannons and LAU-129 guided rocket launchers.

Developing story.
