During an official visit to the port of Plymouth (United Kingdom), Brazil’s Minister of Defense, José Mucio Monteiro Filho, oversaw the progress of the refurbishment work on the future multipurpose vessel Oiapoque, acquired by the Brazilian Navy (BN) in 2025. The vessel’s entry into service—formerly HMS Bulwark of the Royal Navy—is scheduled for June 30 of this year and will consolidate the expansion of the BN’s amphibious capabilities.

During the visit, carried out a few days ago, Monteiro Filho toured several areas of the ship and highlighted the commitment of Brazilian Navy personnel deployed in the United Kingdom, who are closely following the modernization work. In this regard, he stated: “The efforts of these service members, far from their families, reflect the country’s commitment to strengthening our Navy.” The inspection itinerary included the bridge, the combat information center, and the aft well deck, which allows the deployment of landing craft—an essential capability for amphibious, logistical, and humanitarian support missions.

The Oiapoque, measuring 176 meters in length and displacing 18,500 tons, features a design that allows it to transport amphibious armored vehicles and support vehicles to landing areas, operate two large helicopters, and carry general cargo such as field hospital modules. Thanks to its large flight deck and internal well dock, the ship offers remarkable versatility for power projection missions, disaster relief, and support to coastal and island communities. According to its designated commanding officer, Commander (Navy) Antonio de Barcellos Neto, “its presence acts as a deterrent, reinforcing Brazilian sovereignty over its jurisdictional waters and areas of strategic interest.”

While refurbishment work continues, crew training and certification are progressing in parallel. In late 2025, the Brazilian Navy deployed a second group of personnel to the United Kingdom, consisting of 92 sailors, who are taking part in specialized courses and training under the supervision of the Royal Navy and the company Babcock. The training includes the operation of electric propulsion systems, high-voltage power management, and advanced command and control procedures—technologies that are relatively uncommon within the Brazilian fleet. This training will ensure a smooth and safe transition once the ship enters active service.

The Oiapoque Reception Group, led by Commander Barcellos, completed the second phase of the training program in December 2025 with the arrival of the so-called “Bravo Group.” Prior to its official entry into service on June 30, a new delegation is expected to be sent to Plymouth to continue certification activities, while the ship conducts its final sea trials and operational inspections. Upon completion of this stage, the vessel will be ready to begin its transit to Brazil, scheduled for October of the same year.

It should be recalled that the acquisition of the former HMS Bulwark was formalized during the Defence & Security Equipment International (DSEI) exhibition held in London in September 2025, expanding naval cooperation between the two countries following the successful transfer of the helicopter carrier HMS Ocean, currently in service as NAM Atlântico (A-140). With its incorporation, Oiapoque reaffirms the Brazilian Navy’s modernization strategy in terms of power projection, consolidating a comprehensive renewal process of its naval units that is complemented by the Tamandaré-class frigate program and the Submarine Development Program (PROSUB).
