As previously reported by Zona Militar, the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) announced last July the purchase of two S-70 Firehawk helicopters, with support from the Colombian Aeronautical Industry Corporation (CIAC S.A.) for their operation by the Colombian Aerospace Force. Their primary mission will be firefighting and wildfire suppression. Zona Militar was able to confirm, based on statements from UNGRD Director Carlos Alberto Carrillo Arenas, that the aircraft are currently in the final stages of maintenance, specifically completing painting work in Colombian Aerospace Force colors.

This information was confirmed during an exclusive interview given by Dr. Carrillo to Zona Militar, in which, when asked about the readiness status, he stated: “We are pleased to announce that these helicopters are already in the technical readiness process. They are expected to enter service next year, around February. Final details are being completed, especially paint maintenance, and the project is progressing according to its established schedule. We also managed to secure a favorable exchange rate due to the depreciation of the U.S. dollar, which has given us additional flexibility, as this international acquisition carried currency volatility as a risk factor. Everything is progressing very well, and we hope that these first Firehawks to arrive will be the first of many.

Regarding the experience of Colombia’s Armed Forces in operating the UH-60 family, the director added: “Colombia has extensive experience with these helicopters—around 40 years of operating UH-60s, particularly in military roles—and this represents a first step toward leveraging that experience and capability in other areas such as firefighting, personnel rescue, and all the activities that make up the UNGRD’s mission.”

Dr. Carrillo’s actions demonstrate that, without political overtones and by working with dedication and integrity, ambitious projects can be carried out for the benefit of the Nation, the State, and the Colombian Armed Forces.
