In the framework of the Strategic Program of Armored Forces, the Brazilian Army (EB) advances toward a new stage of modernization with the upcoming incorporation of its first batch of Reconnaissance Combat Vehicles (VCR) “Cascavel NG,” developed by the Brazilian company AKAER. During the first semester of 2026, the delivery of a pilot batch of seven modernized units will be carried out, marking a milestone in the renewal of the EB’s reconnaissance armored fleet.

Two of these vehicles were already delivered and subjected to intense testing at the Army Evaluation Center (CAEx), in Guaratiba (Rio de Janeiro), during September 2024. The evaluations included performance tests on rough terrain, combat simulations, and ford and ramp crossing exercises. The results confirmed the vehicle’s full suitability to the Army’s operational requirements, consolidating confidence in the improvements introduced in the new model.

While the two prototype units continue to be evaluated, the remaining five Cascavel NG units of the pilot batch are in the process of modernization and will be subjected to the same testing protocol before their distribution to the Motorized Cavalry units. General Hertz Nascimento, Head of the Brazilian Army’s Department of Science and Technology, underscored that “the new engine, the aiming and state-of-the-art optronic systems bring unprecedented capabilities to the material, substantially elevating the combat potential of the Land Force.”

The modernization project of the “Cascavel NG” is led by the “Land Force” Consortium under the direction of AKAER, in close collaboration with the Army’s Directorate of Manufacturing. Originally designed in the 1970s, the EE-09 Cascavel armored vehicle has been completely renewed, integrating contemporary technology that places it at the level of the most modern vehicles in its category. Among the main improvements stand out a higher power engine, electronic tire pressure control and adaptive suspension systems, automated turret with “joystick” type command control, thermal cameras and night vision, fire control computer with automated ballistic calculation, and a fully integrated Command and Control (C2) system.

Cascavel NG

It is worth remembering that the first prototype of the Cascavel NG was presented officially in November 2023, at the Military Academy of Agulhas Negras (AMAN). During its exhibition, the new optronic systems, the modernized engine, and the 360° panoramic observation capability, thanks to a package of high-resolution digital cameras, were highlighted. Likewise, in September 2024, the vehicle was evaluated along with the MAX 1.2 AC anti-tank missile, developed by the local company SIATT, which could be integrated into the Cascavel NG’s turret as a complementary weapon, increasing its effective range.

In parallel to the program’s technical advance, training actions have been intensified. Between September 15 and 26, 2025, a group of 30 military personnel received specialized instruction at the São Paulo War Arsenal (AGSP). The course, imparted by personnel from the Consortium led by AKAER, covered the vehicle’s integral operation, the handling of the 90 mm turret, the vision system, the C2, and the best maintenance practices, reinforcing the technical and operational autonomy of the Army units.
