Through a brief statement published yesterday on its Telegram channel, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the nuclear-powered submarines Krasnoyarsk (Yasen-M class) and Omsk (Oscar class) of the Russian Navy carried out launches of Oniks and Granit cruise missiles in Pacific waters, more specifically in the Sea of Okhotsk. According to the official description, the activity consisted of three launches in total against a naval target located about 250 kilometers away, with it later being reported that all the missiles struck the target with precision.

Expanding on details, the Russian defense ministry indicated that these combat exercises are framed within a command and control training carried out together with the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, which are aimed at sending a deterrent message and demonstrating the country’s capabilities to carry out the defense of the main maritime routes in the North Pacific. Particularly, we refer to the regions of Kamchatka and Chukotka, where a growing level of naval activity has been noted in recent days.
On the other hand, it was reported that the Russian Navy carried out a deployment of various surface ships and aircraft to close off the geographic space where the launches were finally conducted, issuing prior warnings for civilian transit in order to avoid potential accidents. According to the information published, the exercises were carried out without major incidents, showing the success of said encirclement operation.
It should be noted in this regard that the activity took place in accordance with the annual training plans defined by the Russian Navy, this being the last exercise of the training period planned for the summer (of the northern hemisphere). In terms of its scale, we are talking about operations that include the participation of more than 10 ships, complemented by planes and helicopters of Russian Naval Aviation, all of them working under the orbit of the command of the Pacific Fleet. In addition, there is also the participation of Bastion coastal batteries, as the occasion is being used to improve the interoperability of naval and land units.
Referring to this in previous statements, the institution’s press service stated: “The exercise is the last combat training event of the Pacific Fleet’s summer training period and aims to test the combat readiness of the forces and troops, as well as of the military command bodies to carry out defensive combat operations.”
