The new Harbin Z-20 assault and attack helicopter of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China is expected to be officially unveiled at the 7th China Helicopter Exposition, according to official media reports. The fair will take place from October 16 to 19 in Tianjian, where different types of military and civilian helicopters and aircraft will be on display.

The news regarding the development of the PLA’s new helicopter is part of efforts to expand the Z-20 family of platforms, incorporating versions with specific functions and capabilities for assault and attack operations. This new variant, designated Z-20T, was first seen in 2024 after the publication of a report with images by the PLA, which hinted at this combat-oriented configuration.
At that time, it was noted that the new platform, equipped with short wings on each side for carrying weapons, featured modifications on its nose, integrating what appears to be a new electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor pod providing data to enable precision strikes. This, in turn, confirmed what was shown in illustrative images of a Z-20T published by the state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) in 2021.
Although the medium helicopter Harbin Z-20T was publicly displayed during the military parade for the 80th Anniversary of Victory Day, held on September 3, it will now be showcased officially and in greater detail, allowing a clearer appreciation of its operational features. In addition, the 7th China Helicopter Exposition will feature a total of 52 helicopters, drones, and eVTOLs, including the Z-10, Z-19, Z-20, Z-20T, Z-8L helicopters and the KVD001 and KVD002 drones of the Chinese PLA.
Lastly, it should be noted that in the process of developing new capabilities adapted to the PLA’s current needs, China has also incorporated the shipborne version of the Harbin Z-20 for naval operations of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). Designated Z-20J, this model was first presented during Airshow China 2024, held in November in Zhuhai, where a unit configured for the naval force’s transport and assault requirements was displayed. Although no specific details have been provided about its features, various sources mention that the Z-20J is based on the search and rescue (SAR) version of the Z-20, similar to the U.S. Navy’s SH-60 Seahawk.
