The Russian Aerospace Forces received a new modernized Il-76MD-90A military transport aircraft from the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), according to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

“In the framework of carrying out the tasks set by the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, regarding the delivery of highly demanded equipment and systems, the crew of the Aerospace Forces received an Il-76MD-90A aircraft,” the defense department stated in a press release.

The commander of the crew that participated in the delivery highlighted the technical characteristics of the aircraft. “The Il-76 is a multifunctional aircraft. The new models are equipped with more precise onboard systems, which increases efficiency in carrying out the missions assigned to our regiment. Today, during the flight, our crew demonstrated cohesion. The team worked as a single unit,” he stated.

The Il-76MD-90A is a deeply modernized version of the Il-76MD. It is designed to transport and airdrop military equipment, personnel, and cargo, as well as to evacuate the wounded and sick.

Previous deliveries

During 2023, the Russian Aerospace Forces received four aircraft of this type. The last of that year was delivered in December by the Aviastar aviation plant, part of UAC, and it was the fourth unit incorporated during the period.

The Il-76MD-90A is an evolution of the Soviet Il-76. Its improvements include PS-90A-76 engines, a new wing design, and an upgraded cockpit to full-glass standards. These modifications allow greater range and cargo capacity compared to its predecessor.

At that time, Daniil Brenerman, General Director of PAO “Ilyushin,” stated: “Another aircraft in this year’s program is in the final stage of factory testing. We will fulfill our commitments to supply military transport aircraft to the Ministry of Defense of Russia on schedule.”

He also added that the Aviastar plant continued to increase production rates: “We plan to further expand the series. A production reserve for next year is already being established.” Following Brenerman’s words, and despite having delivered six of these aircraft to the Russian Aerospace Forces during 2024, the program has experienced some delays, because twelve units were originally planned to be delivered over the course of last year.
