As part of the United States Air Force (USAF) deployment to Colombia for the Relámpago de los Andes exercise, F-16C/D Fighting Falcon fighter jets arrived at Palanquero Air Base to take part in this new edition of the multinational training event. The central objective of the exercise is to enhance interoperability and strengthen techniques for air superiority and large-scale operations within the framework of the strategic alliance between both countries.

The U.S. contingent is composed of approximately 300 personnel, along with aircraft from the South Carolina Air National Guard’s 169th Fighter Wing, responsible for operating the deployed F-16Cs. These units carry out key missions such as combined flights and simulated air-to-air engagements, which improve operational readiness and facilitate the exchange of procedures between crews. In addition to the fighters, the U.S. also deployed C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft from the 315th Airlift Wing, an HC-130J Combat King II, and other platforms operating from various bases within Colombian territory.

In the days prior to the formal start of the exercise, the F-16C/Ds conducted ramp maneuvers, post-flight inspections, and pre-flight checks, tasks handled by the 169th Fighter Wing’s technical personnel. Images released by the USAF show the sustained operational tempo and the precision of the joint work carried out in Palanquero.

Relámpago de los Andes not only includes air combat operations but also exercises focused on humanitarian assistance, combat search and rescue (CSAR), and disaster relief. This combination of missions allows participating forces to train for a wide range of scenarios, from high-intensity combat environments to situations that require a rapid response to civilian emergencies.

The exercise is part of a well-established bilateral cooperation between the United States and Colombian air forces, aligned with the U.S. Southern Command’s (AFSOUTH) commitment to acting as a reliable partner in the region. Through these engagements, tactical capabilities, operational coordination, and the strategic bonds necessary to jointly face common challenges and crisis situations are strengthened.
