In light of the evolving aerial threat landscape—particularly from low-signature, hard-to-detect targets—China North Industries Group Corporation (NORINCO) recently unveiled a new laser-based anti-drone system intended for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The official demonstration took place on Monday, July 21, during a live-fire exercise at a test range in northern China.

Recent reports indicate that the Chinese company is currently showcasing a wide array of platforms, ranging from unmanned aerial vehicles to never-before-seen defense systems. Among these, the state-owned firm introduced the OW5 laser system, designed to intercept aerial targets using directed energy—a critical operational capability in the face of increasing drone threats.
The demonstration was staged around a simulated scenario involving the capture and control of strategic border points, divided into six phases: reconnaissance, AI-based planning, infiltration, aerial strike, elimination, and anti-access operations. Multiple domestically produced systems were deployed as part of the exercise.
According to available information, the OW5 is a low-altitude laser anti-drone platform mounted on an 8×8 vehicle, featuring full autonomy in power generation. It is primarily designed to protect strategic sites and convoys from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks. The system is equipped with radar and electronic systems that allow for rapid detection and tracking of targets, all without the need for traditional munitions. Notable features include its high-speed targeting, precision, and the ability to operate autonomously or in coordination with other systems.
These technological advances align with the PLA’s growing interest in acquiring next-generation air defense capabilities, especially amid the tactical proliferation of drones in recent conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine. Moreover, the unveiling of the OW5 system not only aims to position NORINCO as a key supplier of directed-energy solutions, but also reflects China’s broader effort to strengthen the protection of its ground forces and critical infrastructure against hard-to-detect and neutralize threats.
