The Italian Navy continues to advance the modernization of its submarine fleet with the integration of major technological upgrades in its new Type 212 Near Future Submarines (NFS), including advanced sensors and combat systems. This was formalized through the signing of Amendment No. 7 of the U212 NFS contract, signed by U212 NFS program manager Decio Trinca and Fincantieri’s Vice President of Naval Project Development, Dario Oliveri.

This new agreement marks a significant step in strengthening Italy’s submarine capabilities and reaffirms the country’s commitment to innovation in the undersea domain. The modifications introduced include key upgrades to sensor and combat systems, an enhancement of periscope capabilities, minor engineering changes to optimize system integration on board, and progress in the feasibility study for the development of a submarine specialized in special operations — envisioned as a technological incubator within the NFS program.

Reportedly, the engineering change proposals included will not only enhance the immediate operational performance of these vessels but also lay the groundwork for future advancements in undersea warfare, reinforcing Italy’s position as one of the most advanced actors in the sector across Europe.

In parallel, on June 28, shipbuilder Fincantieri received the order from the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) to begin construction of the fourth U212 NFS submarine. The contract, valued at approximately €500 million, also includes spare parts and technical support for this unit as well as the three previously acquired by the Italian Navy.

The Type 212 NFS submarines are a technological evolution of the successful U212A class, developed in collaboration with Germany, and are specifically designed to meet 21st-century operational challenges. Key features include an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system, extended submerged endurance, and stealth capabilities that make them ideal platforms for both conventional missions and special operations.

It is worth noting that this new U212NFS class is intended to replace the Sauro-class submarines, which the Italian Navy plans to retire in the near future. These vessels have been in service since the 1980s, and Italy currently operates four units that work alongside the Todaro-class submarines (U212A), the first of which entered active service in 2005.

With these new additions and upgrades, Italy reinforces its commitment to maritime defense and its strategic positioning in the Mediterranean, consolidating its role as a leading naval power within both the European sphere and NATO.
