With the participation of delegations from the United States, Argentina, and Peru, the second planning meeting for the combined exercise Southern Vanguard 2025 concluded at the Chilean Army’s Mountain Detachment No. 17 “Los Ángeles.” The exercise will take place in the Antuco area between August 11 and 31.
This meeting was key for coordinating operational aspects between the Chilean Army and the U.S. Army South, within the framework of strengthening interoperability among allied forces and conducting joint training in winter conditions.
The exercise will be led by the III Mountain Division, which will be responsible for instructing participating troops in survival, movement, and combat techniques in high mountain environments. The program includes individual and collective training, an Integrated Training Phase (FIT), and a final Field Training Exercise (FTX), where the capabilities acquired will be assessed in a real-world setting.
Brigadier General Claudio Mardones P., Commander of the III Mountain Division and General Director of the exercise, highlighted the joint work and commitment of the various units involved:
“This is the second in-person meeting, not only with the United States but also with all the Army units working to make this exercise happen. We have also held several virtual meetings that will continue in the coming months.”
For his part, Colonel Chris Jhones of the U.S. Army South emphasized that Southern Vanguard 25 represents much more than tactical training: “This exercise aims to strengthen combined readiness and mountain capabilities. Training in these conditions is physically and operationally demanding, making it an ideal opportunity to prepare our forces for joint operations in any scenario.”
Southern Vanguard 2025 not only offers advanced training opportunities but also stands as a milestone in international cooperation, reinforcing Chile’s position as a strategic partner in mountain operations.
