As part of the multinational special operations exercise Southern Star 2025, a U.S. Air Force Lockheed C-5M Super Galaxy strategic airlifter arrived at Cerro Moreno Air Base in Antofagasta, Chile, on Sunday, June 1st, carrying personnel and equipment as part of the planned logistics operations for the exercise.
The aircraft’s arrival was part of the deployment of U.S. Special Operations Forces personnel and equipment, who coordinated with the Base Operations Group of the Chilean Air Force’s 5th Air Brigade for the transport of motorized vehicles. The activity enabled the validation of embarkation and tactical equipment transport procedures, as well as the evaluation of ground support systems in a combined operational context.

Exercise Estrella Austral 2025 is being held in Chile from May 26 to June 8, with participation from special forces of six countries and ten observer nations. The exercise brings together over 2,700 troops, conducting operations spanning from Antofagasta to Punta Arenas. Its objective is to enhance interoperability and strengthen global partnerships through joint training in a variety of operational scenarios.
The United States Air Force is participating in this edition with the deployment of C-5M Super Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster III strategic transport aircraft, as well as platforms designed for special operations, including the MC-130J Commando II and U-28A Draco.

It is worth noting that personnel from the USAF’s 433rd Airlift Wing (Alamo Wing) organized a guided tour of the C-5M Super Galaxy at Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in Santiago. The event was held for members of the U.S. Embassy in Chile and their families, who had the opportunity to learn in detail about the aircraft’s capabilities and the assets involved in the exercise.
