The United States government has authorized the possible sale of hundreds of FGM-148F Javelin anti-tank missiles to equip the Estonian Defence Forces. This follows the most recent notification sent by the U.S. State Department to Congress for the approval of the operation through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, valued at USD 296 million.

In recent years—especially since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine—Estonia, like the other Baltic states in particular, and Europe in general, has been engaged in a major acquisition and modernization program for its Armed Forces.

Examples include the incorporation of the first HIMARS high-mobility artillery rocket systems acquired from the United States, 4×4 and 6×6 armored vehicles from Turkey, and 155mm CAESAR self-propelled howitzers from France.

Focusing on the anti-tank capabilities of its infantry units, the Estonian government has requested from the United States the purchase of up to eight hundred (800) FGM-148F Javelin missiles, along with seventy-two (72) lightweight Command Launch Units (CLU). Additionally, according to information released by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on May 22, the package—valued at USD 296 million—also includes training missiles and equipment, spare parts, and documentation. The joint venture formed by Lockheed Martin and Raytheon (TX Corporation) will act as the principal contractor.

This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by improving the security of a NATO Ally that continues to be an important force for political stability and economic progress in Europe. This sale is consistent with U.S. initiatives to provide key allies in the region with modern systems that will enhance interoperability with U.S. forces and increase security.

It adds: “The proposed sale will enhance Estonia’s capability to meet current and future threats by providing a credible force that is capable of deterring adversaries and participating in NATO operations. The sale will support its goal of improving national and territorial defense as well as interoperability with U.S. and NATO forces. Estonia will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment into its armed forces.
