In what stands as a new display of Ukrainian inventiveness to modernize its old combat platforms, the National Guard of Ukraine has revealed new images showing its BM-21 Grad rocket launchers mounted on new MAN 6×6 trucks, which represents a significant quality leap compared to the old Ural 4320 6×6 chassis. The news was also confirmed via social media by the commander of the force, Oleksandr Pivnenko, who highlighted the greater mobility, autonomy, and comfort of the new German-made cabin.

Reviewing some details, Commander Pivnenko explained that the new MAN truck comes with improvements in ergonomics and protection, while its acquisition allowed for the redistribution of the equipment within the truck’s space to enable the crew to work more comfortably. On the other hand, he spoke about the integration of new electronic warfare and communication systems, although without providing further details about which specific elements were integrated; they are expected to offer greater survivability for the launchers in the midst of modern combat.
In addition, the National Guard managed to integrate an advanced fully digital fire control system into the platform, which features specific software to detect potential targets, perform firing calculations, and adjust the launcher’s angles to increase hit probability—all in a matter of seconds. Moreover, work was done on installing new electric servomotors that allow this last task of the fire control system to be faster and more precise, while also preventing the exposure of gunners to perform these adjustments.

Quoting some statements from the commander of the institution himself: “In this way, the artillery part of the BM-21 MLRS was integrated into a new vehicle platform with fully upgraded combat systems and now meets the requirements of the modern battlefield in the context of MLRS use. This allows NGU units to carry out fire support tasks more effectively in maneuver warfare. The National Guard of Ukraine continues to work constantly on the rearmament and modernization of its combat units to strengthen the state’s defense capabilities and preserve the lives of Ukrainian soldiers.”
