One of the standout presences at SITDEF 2025 was the K2 Black Panther tank, a combat vehicle presented by Hyundai Rotem. The participation of the modern South Korean tank in Lima reflects the strong interest of the South Korean company in establishing its products within the Peruvian Army, which could represent a first step toward expanding its customer base in the region.

Although Hyundai Rotem did not provide further details on the negotiation process or the Peruvian Army’s level of interest in the K2 Black Panther, several actors involved in the initiative expressed cautious optimism at SITDEF regarding the South Korean company’s proposal. While no additional public information was disclosed, one point of interest for Peru appears to be that the Black Panther offer includes a more substantial local participation. This could involve the production of certain components to support the logistics and maintenance chain for the K2 tanks, in the event a purchase is finalized.
It is worth recalling that in mid-November 2024, the Peruvian Army selected the Hyundai Rotem K2 Black Panther as the candidate to modernize its armored cavalry branch. This would replace its aging fleet of Soviet-era T-55 tanks. According to a joint announcement by the Army’s Weapons and Ammunition Factory (FAME S.A.C.) and Hyundai Rotem, both parties signed a document titled “General Cooperation Agreement on Ground Equipment,” which aimed to lay the groundwork for the provision of land-based weapons systems, including the K2 tanks and wheeled armored vehicles.
Regarding the latter, the Peruvian government confirmed in November 2024 the acquisition of approximately thirty 8×8 K808 White Tiger armored vehicles for its Army. In this procurement process, FAME S.A.C. and the Army Arsenal are expected to play various roles. The acquisition was part of a requirement to incorporate “…thirty wheeled 8×8 troop transport armored vehicles under IOARR-type investments (Optimization, Marginal Expansion, Rehabilitation, and Replacement Investments)…”

The 8×8 armored vehicles are expected to be assigned to the 3rd Armored Brigade in Moquegua and the 6th Armored Brigade in Tacna. Their incorporation will allow the military to “…strengthen operational capabilities for military operations and actions under the National Defense clause. Additionally, these vehicles will contribute to the strategic role of participating in the National Disaster Risk Management System…”
K2 Black Panther for the Peruvian Army
The addition of Hyundai Rotem’s K2 Black Panther tanks to the Peruvian Army would not only significantly modernize its armored cavalry capabilities but also place Peru at the forefront regionally, as no other Latin American army currently operates combat vehicles with similar characteristics.

The Peruvian Army once possessed a powerful armored cavalry branch during the mid-1970s and early 1980s thanks to the acquisition of more than 300 Soviet-built T-55 tanks. These combat vehicles were among the most capable in the region until the introduction of Western models with equal or superior capabilities.
Over the years, Peru faced several challenges in sustaining or modernizing its aging T-55 tanks, for which a replacement has yet to be secured despite numerous offers being considered in recent years.
However, Hyundai Rotem’s K2 Black Panther proposal could finally bring about the long-awaited update of the Peruvian Army’s armored cavalry. As one of the most modern combat vehicles in its class, the K2’s acquisition would not come without challenges, especially regarding the cost of procurement and the resources required to integrate, operate, and maintain the system within the operational force.

One of the advantages of the K2 Black Panther is the increasingly strong defense and industrial cooperation between Peru and South Korea—something clearly reflected at SITDEF 2025 through announcements made by SIMA and LIG / Hyundai Heavy Industries. When it comes to combat vehicles, the first step taken with the 8×8 K808 VCBRs could soon be followed by the K2 tank, marking a major milestone for the Peruvian Army.
