During the morning hours, various reports began to spread, indicating the combat loss of a Ukrainian F-16 Fighting Falcon. As the day progressed, it was the Ukrainian Air Force itself that officially confirmed the loss of the combat aircraft and its pilot today, April 12, without providing further details.

As of today, Western allies continue moving forward with the transfer of a significant batch of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine. Among them, Denmark and the Netherlands stand out, having already delivered part of the pledged combat aircraft to the Ukrainian Air Force.
The growing size of the Fighting Falcon fleet has allowed the Ukrainian Air Force to increase the operational availability of the U.S.-made fighter for combat missions—something recently confirmed by senior U.S. military officials.
In a recent hearing before the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, General Christopher G. Cavoli, head of U.S. European Command (EUCOM) and Supreme Allied Commander Europe, stated: “They fly every day; they have neutralized a large number of cruise missile threats and have also carried out numerous offensives, particularly bombing missions in the east.”

The increased availability of fighter jets, along with growing familiarity and mastery of the new platform, is believed to have allowed the Ukrainian Air Force to assign a greater number of missions to the F-16s and their pilots. At the start of their operational service, missions were limited to air cover over Kyiv and interception of various types of drones and missiles. However, as new reports indicate, these roles have expanded to include ground attack operations and close air support, thanks to the wide array of armaments they have been equipped with—for example, the U.S.-supplied GBU-39 glide bombs.
However, with their increased involvement in the conflict comes the heightened risk of combat losses, tragically resulting in the deaths of their pilots.
Earlier today, and following the proliferation of reports across various platforms and social media, the Ukrainian Air Force confirmed the loss of one of its F-16 fighters, which was being flown by 26-year-old Captain Pavlo Ivanov. However, no further details were provided regarding the circumstances or location of the incident.
With this confirmation, this marks the second officially reported loss of an F-16 in the conflict. The first occurred last August, just days after the arrival of the first aircraft from Denmark, with the death of pilot Oleksiy Mes being confirmed.

Today’s tragic incident also prompted a response from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who expressed his condolences to Captain Ivanov’s family, stating: “My condolences to his family and to all of Pavlo’s brothers-in-arms.”
He added, regarding the limited details available: “Military officials provided the necessary reports on this combat situation. We are establishing all the circumstances. Ukrainian F-16s, Mirages, and MiGs—all our combat aviation—heroically carry out missions, defending our state and supporting ground operations. The Air Force is also engaged in defending Ukraine from Russian missiles and drones.”
With no additional official information, as was the case last year, speculation remains varied—ranging from accidents, to shoot-downs by air defense systems, or even the possibility of friendly fire—none of which have been confirmed.
