The Commander, Naval Surface Force Pacific has announced that the America-class LHD-type amphibious assault ship, USS Tripoli (LHA-7), will be deployed to Japan as part of routine rotations later this year. The vessel will transit from Naval Base San Diego on the U.S. West Coast to Sasebo Naval Base, replacing USS America (LHA-6). This deployment aligns with the objectives set by the Defense Strategic Guidance, aiming to position more capable naval units in the Indo-Pacific region.

The America-class ships are the most modern LHD-type amphibious assault ships in service with the U.S. Navy. Thanks to their flight deck, they can operate VTOL stealth fighters like the F-35B and multi-role aircraft such as the V-22 Osprey, providing a platform tailored to Marine Corps force projection requirements. USS Tripoli (LHA-7) is the second of a planned 11 ships in its class, designed to replace the aging Tarawa-class units. Additionally, it can transport landing craft and deploy a force of up to 1,800 troops.

Commissioned in 2020, Tripoli features an expanded hangar deck, realigned and enlarged aviation maintenance facilities, and increased aviation fuel capacity. Since entering service, LHA-7 has completed its first deployment in the Indo-Pacific, visiting ports in Japan and Singapore and operating in the Atlantic Ocean.

Regarding USS Tripoli‘s upcoming arrival in Japan, Surface Forces Command stated: “The security environment in the Indo-Pacific requires the U.S. Navy to forward-station its most capable ships.” The statement further emphasized that “Tripoli’s forward presence supports the United States’ commitment to Japan’s defense, reinforces U.S. national security, and enhances its ability to protect strategic interests.” Most importantly, the presence of USS Tripoli will ensure a faster response capability for maritime and combined forces.

Meanwhile, USS America (LHA-6), the lead ship of its class, will return to its homeport at Naval Base San Diego after being stationed in Sasebo since December 2019. Currently, America is deployed alongside the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, based in Okinawa, Japan.
