Deepening the renewal of the Republic of Korea Navy’s surface fleet, on January 22, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) held a meeting at Hanwha Ocean’s facilities to kick off the development and design of the future “FFX” Batch IV frigates.

The next-generation FFX Batch IV frigates represent the latest construction batch of the project that began in 2006, aiming to replace ships reaching the final stages of their operational life. These include the Pohang-class patrol vessels, the original Ulsan-class light frigates, and the Gwanggaeto the Great-class destroyers. The presentation covered various topics, including the project timeline, the development of integrated systems for the ships, coordination between different agencies, and the establishment of a collaborative framework among the involved parties.

As part of the preliminary steps before its official launch, the project was approved during the 138th Defense Project Promotion Committee meeting in August 2021. Contracts were then signed in December 2024 with Hanwha Ocean (responsible for constructing the first and second ships), Hanwha Systems (developing the Engineering Control System (ECS) and combat system), and LIG Nex1 (developing the weapons management systems).

Several key technological advancements are expected in this new batch of frigates. First, the design will incorporate lessons learned from testing and operational experience with previous batches. Second, the frigates will feature an upgraded Electronic Warfare System, doubling detection range compared to their predecessors. Third, a newly developed weapons control system will integrate four types of guided weapons: anti-ship missiles, surface-to-surface missiles, surface-to-air missiles, and long-range anti-submarine torpedoes. Lastly, an Engineering Control System (ECS) will be added to significantly enhance operational efficiency and maintenance capabilities.

Experts suggest that Batch IV will be similar in design and capabilities to Batch III but more efficient due to its improved integrated weapons control system. This system is expected to significantly enhance operational efficiency and maintenance by integrating the ship’s four main weapon systems: the C-Star anti-ship missile, the Sea Dragon cruise missile, the K-SAAM short-range surface-to-air missile, and the K-ASROC Red Shark.

Additionally, the successor to the SLQ-200K Sonata electronic warfare system will be incorporated, enhancing detection, electronic warfare capabilities, and the vessel’s survivability in future operational environments.

Considering these developments, DAPA plans to complete the construction of the first and second Batch IV Ulsan-class ships in 2028 and 2029, respectively. Following sea trials, delivery to the Navy is scheduled for 2029 and 2030.
