Following the confirmation of the decommissioning of the landing ships HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark to reduce the number of active units and the budget required for their maintenance, the United Kingdom might sell both ships under a “government-to-government” scheme. This would allow an annual savings of approximately £9 million in maintenance costs while generating additional revenue from the sale of these units.

According to statements by Maria Eagle, Minister of State for the Ministry of Defence, both ships require “costly and lengthy overhauls,” making them financially unviable for British taxpayers. While no official confirmation has been provided, the Brazilian Navy has reportedly been identified as a potential buyer for HMS Bulwark. This interest comes at a time when Brazil’s naval forces are looking to expand their amphibious capabilities and modernize their fleet.

With a displacement of 18,500 tons and the ability to carry up to 305 marines (or 405 in special configurations), six tanks, or 30 light armored vehicles, the HMS Bulwark represents a versatile platform for amphibious operations. Its capacity to operate heavy helicopters like the Chinook and landing craft adds significant value for force projection and humanitarian assistance missions.

It is worth noting that the Brazilian Navy has a history of cooperation with the UK, including the operation of Type 22 frigates of British origin and the Multipurpose Aircraft Carrier NAM Atlântico (A140). Acquired by the Brazilian Navy in February 2018, the Atlântico served in the Royal Navy as HMS Ocean from 1998 to 2018 and is the most recent example of second-hand British naval vessels sold to Brazil.

However, the UK Ministry of Defence has clarified that no final decision has yet been made regarding the fate of HMS Albion, HMS Bulwark, or other retired units. All options, including scrapping or sale, are being evaluated to ensure the decisions are efficient and sustainable.
