In mid-November 2023, India reached an agreement with the United States to locally produce 8×8 Stryker Armored Fighting Vehicles. Recently, during a visit by National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan to New Delhi, he highlighted the significance of this new partnership between the two nations, which will allow India to become the world’s first global manufacturer of this wheeled combat vehicle.

During a visit to the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi, the U.S. official emphasized the growing defense production partnership between the two countries and the opportunities it presents. This is evidenced by the involvement of American companies in various programs, such as the LCA Tejas and its future versions.
On the ground, Sullivan stated: “The Biden administration has approved technological proposals that will enable India to become the first global producer of Stryker combat vehicles, a prominent manufacturer of advanced ammunition systems, and the first foreign producer of next-generation maritime systems.”
The official’s remarks refer to agreements reached with the Indian government in 2023 for the local production of 8×8 Stryker ACVs in the country. While details remain limited, reports at the time mentioned the potential production of up to 1,000 new Strykers, in various configurations, to equip the Indian Army, with an emphasis on outfitting the ACVs with anti-tank weaponry.

“The Stryker has great potential in the future to give India more capabilities in areas particularly relevant along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and some of the challenges it faces with the PRC,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated during his visit in 2023.
Lastly, the Indian government, through its Ministry of Defense, has yet to provide further details, such as the final number of units to be acquired or which local company will be the recipient of these investments and the manufacturer of the Strykers.
