In recent hours, it was officially confirmed that Iraq has presented the first of its new locally manufactured 6×6 Norinco VN22 Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) to equip the Iraqi Army. A video published by the Iraqi Defense Industry Commission (DICI) on social media shows the Chinese-origin vehicle, accompanied by other armored vehicles used by the force.

It is worth noting that the local production of the VN22 was confirmed in April of this year by Iraq during a demonstration of the 6×6 APC. In the event, the President of the Military Industrialization Authority, Engineer Mustafa Ati Hassan, stood alongside a VN22 to announce the start of production of the 6×6 armored vehicle at the Al-Rabie factory, located in southeastern Baghdad.

Since the first images of its presentation months ago until now, online commentators have highlighted that additional thick armor was observed on the front and sides of the open turret. A 12.7 mm CS/LM5 rotary machine gun ammunition box and engine were also identified on both sides of the upper turret.

The vehicle, originally developed by the China North Industries Group Corporation Limited (NORINCO), is designed for personnel transport, patrolling and reconnaissance missions, as well as peacekeeping and other combat operations.

Among its main features is the adoption of a new engine, which, combined with an independent suspension system and a mine-resistant hull design, achieves a balance between mobility, crew protection, and firepower.

The 6×6 APC can be equipped with a remotely operated 30mm weapon station, allowing space for eight soldiers and three crew members. According to the Chinese company, the vehicle has level 14 ballistic protection (up to 14.5mm according to VPAM standards) and level 4A and 4B landmine protection. The unit shown in the Iraqi video was equipped with a manned weapon station featuring a heavy Norinco LM5 triple-barrel 12.7mm machine gun, capable of firing between 1,000 to 2,000 rounds per minute.
