In one of their most recent operational exercises, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China conducted maritime refueling drills with Z-19 attack helicopters and Z-20 transport helicopters. These drills took place from an unidentified vessel in the Yellow Sea, according to China Central Television (CCTV).
According to CCTV’s coverage of the exercise, a brigade from the 71st Group Army organized the takeoff and landing of helicopters, including Harbin Z-19 attack helicopters and Z-20 utility helicopters, on a relay platform amidst a coastal combat scenario. The helicopters were able to refuel and rearm while keeping their engines running, allowing them to quickly return to a simulated combat operation.
Although the type of vessel used has not been specified, Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) suggests that a civilian cargo barge with a flight deck was employed for helicopter operations. Global Times explains that these maritime platforms, escorted by warships and aircraft, complement the PLA Navy’s amphibious assault and landing ships, potentially serving as helicopter carriers. These platforms have large helicopter decks, enhancing flexibility and responsiveness in amphibious operations.
