The U.S. Navy announced the official commissioning of USS Massachusetts (SSN-798), its new Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarine, during a ceremony held on March 28 of this year in Boston, making it the 25th unit of this type within the fleet. The submarine’s entry into service marks a new milestone in one of the US Navy’s most important programs in the field of undersea warfare.

SSN-798 is part of the continued expansion and renewal of the U.S. submarine force, considered a key component of the country’s naval strategy. As part of this effort, its incorporation into the U.S. Navy is intended to strengthen the fleet’s operational capabilities in a global context shaped by growing competition in strategic maritime domains.
USS Massachusetts reached this stage after completing its initial sea trials during 2025, a key phase for validating its systems and performance at sea before its formal incorporation into the U.S. Navy. These trials included evaluations of propulsion, combat systems, and maneuverability, confirming its readiness to join the operational fleet.

As part of the Virginia class, SSN-798 is designed to carry out a broad range of missions, including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence operations, special forces support, and strikes against land targets using cruise missiles. Its nuclear propulsion allows it to operate for long periods without the need for refueling, while maintaining a high level of stealth, one of its main operational advantages.
Given that the program has been organized into construction blocks, throughout its different production blocks the Virginia-class submarines have incorporated progressive improvements in sensors, combat systems, and payload capacity. In the more recent variants, notable advances include the integration of launch systems and greater information-processing capability, allowing them to adapt to increasingly complex scenarios. The first submarine, USS Virginia (SSN-774), was commissioned in 2004.
In addition, the commissioning of USS Massachusetts comes alongside the continued progress of the rest of the program, which is still adding new units. In this regard, USS Idaho (SSN-799), corresponding to the 26th submarine in the series, has already been delivered to the Navy and is currently in the final stages of preparation prior to entering service, reflecting the sustained pace of production. USS Idaho is the 14th Virginia-class submarine delivered by General Dynamics Electric Boat and the eighth of the ten configured under Block IV, the result of the joint industrial agreement with Huntington Ingalls Industries – Newport News Shipbuilding (HII).
