In line with what was reported in mid-March, the company Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) officially unveiled the first production KF-21 Boramae destined for the Republic of Korea Air Force, marking a milestone for the local aeronautical industry. The event is part of the process of incorporating the new combat aircraft, whose development forms part of the national defense strengthening strategy promoted by the government of the South Korea. The unveiling consolidates the program’s progress after years of work and technical evaluations.

During the official ceremony, the South Korean government released a statement highlighting the significance of the achievement. The communiqué stated: “Beyond the skies of Korea, to the skies of the world.” It also affirmed that this first production KF-21 is the result of “25 long years and the effort and dedication of many people,” emphasizing that the new aircraft “will protect the airspace of the Republic of Korea” and act as a tool contributing to regional stability. The government stressed that it will continue advancing toward “self-reliant national defense” and will strengthen its role in global peace and prosperity.

The unveiling of the KF-21 comes after, at the end of January, the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) began the final phase of testing for the locally developed active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar for the program. ADD stated that the objective of this stage is to validate the radar’s multimode capabilities and confirm its full integration into the weapons system. This progress is crucial to completing the fighter’s operational configuration before it enters service.

The ADD announcement followed an official meeting at the agency’s headquarters in Daejeon, where representatives from the Ministry of National Defense of South Korea (MND) participated alongside companies and entities linked to the program. The meeting formally launched the project titled “KF-21 additional armament testing, AESA radar development and system integration,” aimed at ensuring that subsystems meet the operational requirements established for the future fleet.

South Korean defense analysts had anticipated on social media that KAI was finalizing preparations to unveil the first production KF-21. These reports indicated that the presentation was scheduled for March 25 and would represent a significant step forward for the country’s aerospace sector. The information also noted that the KF-21 will be integrated as a complement to the F-15K Slam Eagle and F-35A Lightning II currently operated by the Republic of Korea Air Force.

The development of the KF-21 Boramae constitutes the first comprehensive fighter aircraft program produced by South Korea’s aeronautical industry. This project involved technical and financial challenges, particularly due to difficulties with one of the program’s international partners. Despite this, the continuity of the project enabled the completion of the first production unit, consolidating a key step for the sector.

The incorporation of the KF-21 is part of a broader process aimed at modernizing national defense capabilities, reducing dependence on external suppliers, and strengthening the country’s military infrastructure. The South Korean government has repeatedly stated that the program not only serves a military purpose but also a technological and industrial one, with the goal of expanding local capabilities in aircraft design, development, and production.
