As part of the military operations the United States has been conducting against Iran, various reports indicate that the U.S. Air Force (USAF) may have lost more than a dozen MQ-9 Reaper drones during different combat missions in the Middle East.

According to ABC News, citing U.S. officials, the MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aircraft may have been shot down by Iranian air defense systems or destroyed on the ground as a result of attacks. At the same time, other reports suggest that additional losses may have been recorded in recent days, raising the total number of drones destroyed in the context of Operation Epic Fury.

Although there has been no official balance sheet or additional information from the U.S. Department of War, the scale of the losses is indicative both of the intensity of the ongoing operations and of the volume of assets deployed by the United States in the theater of operations.

A key asset in operations over Iran

The MQ-9 Reaper has established itself as one of the U.S. Air Force’s main platforms for surveillance, reconnaissance, and precision strike missions, having been widely used in asymmetric conflict scenarios over the past decades. In the case of operations against Iran, these systems play a central role in intelligence, target acquisition, and strikes against strategic objectives, operating in increasingly contested environments against more sophisticated air defenses.

Beyond the losses

An issue strongly highlighted by observers focuses on the cost of the MQ-9 Reaper, which has an approximate unit value of USD 16 million, according to data from manufacturer General Atomics, meaning that the recorded losses would represent a significant economic as well as operational impact.

Nevertheless, some point out that the number of drones deployed by the United States in the region could be considerably high, which would allow it to sustain the pace of operations despite the losses suffered. Following this point, it should be mentioned that the MQ-9 Reaper production line was recently closed after the manufacture of more than 570 units, which means that replacing these unmanned aircraft would not be immediate.

Finally, these losses are also part of a much broader picture involving the deployment of a significant number of military assets, mostly by the United States, in order to pressure Iran and its allies. Despite this, a series of losses has been recorded that has put the continuity and duration of the operations up for debate. One of the most significant has been the news regarding USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) and its withdrawal from the theater of operations to undergo maintenance following a fire that originated in the laundry facilities.

However, other incidents have also occurred, such as the destruction of radars associated with the THAAD anti-ballistic systems deployed by the U.S. Army in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, as well as the downing of three USAF F-15E Strike Eagle fighter-bombers in an apparent friendly fire incident which, despite versions indicating they were shot down by a Kuwaiti F/A-18, has not been fully clarified.
